Chapter Eighteen
Stepping out with Ollie beside me, Marc and Becky were busy talking to Lisa in the car. Opening the drivers side, I leaned in, “Lisa, can you get in the back please I would like Ollie to ride up front with me and Ghost.” saying it as calmly as I could.
“But, Jay he's too small to ride up front. He has no car seat or anything.” she virtually moaned back.
“Look, if we come across a police officer, I will take the fine ok!”
Marc snorted in the back and Lisa threw him a dirty look. All he did back was shrug his shoulders. Becky just stared at my face and said "Look, Lisa just get in the back with us it won’t hurt. It's not like we are flying down the country lanes at Mach 1."
Casting an evil look at Ollie she climbed out and went round to the back and climbed in. Lifting Ollie into the drivers side, I let him slide over, then moved to the side to let Ghost jump up, and then climbed in myself.
"What’s going on bud?" Marc asked.
"Let’s just get somewhere we can rest up for a bit. I'm a little strung out with everything that has happened this morning and I need to talk with Lisa as well." I replied.
Starting the engine, we moved off from the shop and further through the small village. Again, we noticed the same lack of violence, we had seen in Peterlee. I was trying to figure out what to do with the whole Lisa, Ollie thing. I mean it's nice to be wanted, but screaming at a little kid like that was a bit much. Thinking of that, it was all together possible that Lisa was suffering from some sort of breakdown. But I don't really know about those sort of things, a twisted ankle yeah, but, something going on in their head nope you got me there.
Coming to the top of a small rise in the road we were greeted with the smell of burnt meat and a sort of acrid smell that caught in the back of your throat. Looking out the front of the Land Rover I could see an opening between the houses that looked like a green of some sort. As we pulled level, both of the girls gasped. I stopped and said “Ollie turn your head and look out of your window bud. Marc grab your sword and come with me.”
Getting out of the car I stood looking across the green as Marc walked round to stand beside me.
“Well, I think we've found out where the people who used to live in the village have gone.” I said.
“Fucking hell, what the fuck has happened here?” he replied.
“I think the sign says it all really.” Pointing across the green.
In the middle of the green stood the partial remains of a burnt out church still smoldering with thick dark smoke. A banner sign was stretched across the gate entrance. 'We have abandoned our Lord God and he has deemed us unfit and that we should pay.
